El Movimiento: Interview with Roberta Rosa founder of Mija Magazine
By: Sarita Sankey
Mija Magazine where Latinas Matter

Mija Magazine, Founder and CEO Roberta RosaI had the immense pleasure to interview the dynamic and the innovative, Roberta Rosa of Mija Magazine. She is both the Founder and CEO of Mija Magazine, based in Lorain, Ohio. Roberta Rosa states: "Mija Magazine is more than a magazine, it is a Movement". Roberta Rosa begin her online magazine in 2004, this year will be the third year of Mija Magazine since it was launched online. Roberta was inspired by her own life experiences as a Latina and a Puerto Rican, and wanted to reach out to other Latinas. As she states: "God wants me to do something greater" and she has shown that through faith, the birth of Mija Magazine has come alive. Mija, which translates to meaning dear or honey in English, represents the real mission of the Magazine founded by Ms. Rosa ("Where Latinas Matter"). Roberta Rosa saw a need to break down the stereotypes that continue to plague Latinas in "Hollywood", as being domestics and caring for children. Roberta wishes to cater to "All Latinos", and provides her readers with a variety of articles that speak of real issues facing Latinas, and even Latinos across the country. The articles range from topics such as "Mija style" to "Entertainment". While working full-time, Roberta Rosa both designed her magazine website and purchased the domain herself, working out of her lovely apartment in Lorain, Ohio, where she was both born and raised.

Roberta Rosa expresses that she wants to empower Latinos, and states that "My readers are my inspiration". She does most of the writing for Mija Magazine, but she currently has a staff of 5 writers that volunteer their time from states such as Florida and New York and contribute to the bi-monthly magazine. She has over 80,000 faithful readers of Mija Magazine, and would like to eventually launch the magazine in print: As Roberta Rosa states "I want Mija Magazine on the stands of Barnes and Noble". Because she works Full-time as well as DJ's, Mija Magazine does take a great deal of her time, but she would love to make her Magazine her full-time career, because she does not want to let her readers down. In a sense Mija Magazine is the child of its founder, Ms. Rosa, and she was able to overcome negativity from others that doubted her success. But, she sees negativity as the driving force for something positive. The reception of her magazine is now more positive, and she has gained immense support in the community. Her articles are even published in La Presna, which is Ohio & Michigan's largest and oldest Latino newspaper since 1989. Her readers look forward to each issue, and Roberta Rosa expressed, some of her readers have stated: "This is better than the last issue". What I love and appreciate about Mija Magazine is that it is truly "down to earth", which is also the goal that Ms. Rosa wants to maintain. Mija Magazine is a creative work, which deserves support and even more success. I have faith that before too long, Mija Magazine will be launched worldwide, and will make Roberta Rosa even more able to reach out to other Latinos across the country. This was an inspiring interview with the founder of Mija Magazine, and I believe she displays through her articles to "never give up on a dream, no matter what others think". Mucho Respeto a Ms. Roberta Rosa.
