Boricua Pride through Creative Art:
Interview with Jasmine Sosa of Mycolorsnyc.com

By: Sarita Sankey

Jasmine SosaSpanish Fli I was not familiar with Mycolorsnyc jewelry made and designed by Jasmine Sosa until while on a trip to Puerto Rico, my dear friend Marilyn of Spanish Fli apparel expressed that she had purchased some of her necklaces and thought they were “very beautiful”, and she thought Ms. Sosa would be great to do a profile on.

From there, I wanted to know more about Mycolorsnyc. What were the designs like? And since I love jewelry, I knew I wanted to purchase some of her designs myself, and did. I was impressed after viewing her website: Mycolorsnyc.com, and then I sought to interview the creative Ms. Jasmine Sosa, and agreed with my amiga Mari that they were indeed beautiful! I wanted to know who was behind these lovely designs. Thus, an interview was imminent.

Mycolorsnyc is the name of the business owned and operated by jewelry designer Jasmine Sosa. Ms. Sosa was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York to Puerto Rican parents. While visiting Puerto Rico, she expresses “I set out to find authentic Puerto Rican souvenirs”. However, Ms. Sosa was quite disappointed, and found most souvenirs to be “Made in China”. Jasmine had studied for many years in both fashion design and patternmaking at the Fashion institute of Technology in New York, and her biggest influence as she states: “My Life-long love of creating, art, arts & crafts, beads, jewelry, design and more.” With this influence of creating, her mission to find “Authentic Puerto Rican souvenirs” helped to spark the creation of Mycolorsnyc jewelry.

My Colors

“In keeping with the interests, I particularly wanted to create a simple line of Puerto Rican themed jewelry that anyone would be proud to wear” states Jasmine. Mycolorsnyc officially began in May of 2006, and her website was created. With the help of her boyfriend and family and friends, she received her first sales by word of mouth. In addition, with the help of a local newspaper where she was featured, she began to receive online orders through her website. To answer my first question: What are the designs like? All jewelry is made of the best materials such as Swarovski crystals, sterling silver wire and non-tarnish wire. Jasmine Sosa’s website includes designs with the Puerto Rican flag made as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets and even belly chains. And even for those that are not Puerto Rican, Jasmine can design jewelry that incorporates such flags of the following countries: Cuba, Italy, France and Dominican Republic. However, Ms. Sosa can be contacted regarding any other flags.

She runs Mycolorsnyc part-time, and has future goals of expanding her line and would like to incorporate more jewelry, such as hair accessories, wearable art and other pieces of jewelry that are not related to flags. Jasmine Sosa’s designs continue to get positive feedback from customers, and some have stated: “They are proud to wear them.” What intrigues me about Ms. Sosa is that she is able to express her pride through her one of kind designs, but most importantly she loves what she does. I wish Ms. Sosa continued success, and because I love her designs so much, I am looking forward to the expansion of Mycolorsnyc.
