Poet and novelist Giannina Braschi will debut a riveting scene from her forthcoming work entitled "Hamlet and Segismundo," on Wednesday April 8th at 7 pm in Carmichael Auditorium, Hunter Lab, at Brown University. Free and open to the public, this special event is the artistic centerpiece of Brown's annual Spring festival of Puerto Rican Culture. Braschi's presentation will tackle the political and economic relationship between Puerto and the United States as voiced through characters in Shakespeare's Hamlet and Calderon de la Barca's Life is a Dream.

Born in Puerto Rico and based in New York, Professor Braschi is the author of the experimental bilingual novel YO-YO BOING! and the poetry trilogy EMPIRE OF DREAMS, which chronicles the Latin American immigrant's experiences in the United States. "For decades, Puerto Rican authors have carried out a linguistic revolution, and Giannina Braschi," noted The Boston Globe, "especially in her novel YO-YO BOING! testifies to it." Her work is "a synergetic fusion that marks in a determinant fashion the lived experiences of U. S. Hispanics," said the late American essayist and novelist David Foster Wallace. Braschi has won awards from PEN American Center, National Endowment for the Arts, Ford Foundation, Reed Foundation, Danforth, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Excerpts of "Hamlet and Segismundo" have appeared in literary journals in English, as well as in Swedish, Italian, and French translations. Her work inaugurated the YALE LIBRARY of World Literature in Translation. With a PhD. in Hispanic Literatures, she has written on Cervantes, Garcilaso, Vallejo, Lorca, and Becquer.

Join us for a lively reading in English immediately followed by a reception. Tostones, yuca, and croquetas de jamon will be served.

Soraida, New York-born artist known internationally for creating the Art of Verdadism, addresses stereotypes through a series of ink drawings depicting the many faces of men and women of all races, ethnicity and religions. Since 1992, Soraida has been a social advocate and activist whose hardedge abstract paintings juxtaposed with written social commentaries have been recognized for tackling racism, sexism, stereotypes and many of the issues plaguing America society.
This series of original hand drawn ink drawings were inspired by Soraida’s original painting, Puerto Rican Stereotype: The Way You See Me Without Looking At Me, and this painting’s written social commentary, which was written in 1992: “Throughout my life, I have met lots of people that have never experienced meeting or getting to know a Puerto Rican woman. I have had some people admit to me their feelings on what they thought a Puerto Rican woman looked and acted like. Puerto Rican Stereotype: The Way You See Me Without Looking At Me is a satirical painting on the false information given to me by the media and other life experiences. The bowl of fruit on the head represents my childhood memories of Hollywood's 'Carmen Miranda' portrayal of women from Spanish-Speaking backgrounds. The tray in the hands is also from Hollywood's prevalent image of Puerto Rican women as domestic help. The bold colors show the stereotype of loudness that is assumed as to how Puerto Rican women dress. The obvious colorful female genitalia show the Puerto Rican woman's place in society as ornaments.”
Opening reception is by appointment only: March 7, 2009 from 3-7PM. This exhibition ends March 28th. The Verdadism Art Gallery is located in a 110 year old Queen Anne Victorian building, minutes from Philadelphia and within close proximity to New York City. A TRIBUTE TO PEDRO “CUBAN PETE” AGUILAR
(June 14, 1927 – January 13, 2009)
You are cordially invited to join hostesses, Barbara Craddock and Denise Donay, for A Tribute to Pedro “Cuban Pete” Aguilar on Sunday, February 22, 2009. The event will be held from 3 – 7 PM, at Boys & Girls Harbor, Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts, conveniently located at 1 East 104 Street, New York City. In addition to his illustrious career, he was also a Father, a brother, and a friend to many. Mingle with Cuban Pete’s family and friends, share memories, and remember his legacy and accomplishments.
Pedro “Cuban Pete” Aguilar is the name that will be forever synonymous with “clave,” the rhythmic structure of Latin dance and music. A true Palladium Mambo icon, he invented scores of dance movements and hand embellishments viewed as the standards of Latin dance today. He began performing professionally with Millie Donay in 1951, and the two set the dance world afire with their sizzling mambo and sensual guajira. He went on to perform in movies, television, stage, and danced for American Presidents, heads of state and dignitaries, as well as serve as choreographer and consultant for the film, “Mambo Kings.” A gifted expert in the history, culture, and artistry of Latin dance and music, he and Barbara Craddock performed, taught, and lectured worldwide, since 1998. The duo made dance history by collaborating with Miami City Ballet on their unprecedented work, “Mambo No. 2 a.m.,” and they conceptualized and choreographed an original ballet, “Latin Magic,” for the University of the Arts School of Dance.
Minimum donations of $5.00 per person will be accepted at the door and all proceeds will fund the newly established Cuban Pete & Barbara Craddock Dance Scholarship Fund, benefiting Boys & Girls Harbor. A Latin light-bite menu will be available for purchase.
For additional information, please contact Barbara Craddock at 305-931-3336 or cubanpeteent@aol.com
