Puerto Rico - Don't Miss the Rum Distillery Tour

By Kip Devvy

The Caribbean is famous for its rum and Puerto Rico is no exception. In fact, you might consider this island territory to be the capital of world rum production, thanks to the presence of the huge Bacardi rum distillery.

Some of the best times you will spend in Puerto Rico may involve lingering over a mojito or a cuba libre (rum and coke) with new friends you met on the island. Learn conversational Spanish before you go to P.R., and these times will be extra pleasurable.

The Bacardi distillery is a must-see tourist stop if you are a fan of this drink, which is made from sugar cane. The tour is free but getting there will cost you a few coins (just a few, though).

In Old San Juan, go down to Pier 2 on the San Juan Bay waterfront. Pay 50 cents at the ferry terminal to hop aboard one of the frequent and fast water taxis. On the other side of the bay you will find taxis waiting to take you to the distillery for $3 one-way. So including your return trip (taxi + water taxi), your total cost for this excursion will be $7.

Besides an enjoyable and informative tour, the Bacardi folks will give you tickets good for two free rum drinks at the bar serving the pavilion where people wait to catch a tram to the main building.

On a busy day you might have to wait up to 20 minutes before starting your tour, so spend that time getting to know the folks around you in the pavilion. Many of them will be native Puerto Ricans, so learn conversational Spanish before you go and your experience will be that much richer.

Spanish can be easy to learn. It doesn't matter if you flunked it in high school, or you think you have no language aptitude, you can learn to speak Spanish.

Learning to speak Spanish opens a whole new world of adventure to you. You will have more exciting and intimate travel experiences when you can carry on real conversations with the native Spanish speakers you encounter. And if you're single, picture the fun of dating or having a romantic relationship with someone you meet because you can approach them in their language!

There are tons of resources for learning Spanish. Nothing really clicked for me, though, until I discovered the unusual method discussed at http://www.spain-living.com As incredible as it sounds, with this method you can actually learn to speak Spanish naturally and confidently in as little as 2 months!
